Anyone who wants to work as an insurance agent in the state of New Jersey must obtain a license from the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance. This license is required in order to legally represent insurance companies and sell insurance products in the state. In order to obtain a license, individuals must meet certain educational and experience requirements.
Individuals must first complete an approved pre-licensing course. The course must be taken at an approved school, and must consist of at least 20 hours of instruction. Following the successful completion of the course, individuals must pass a licensing exam. The exam consists of multiple-choice questions and covers topics such as insurance law, insurance regulations, and insurance practices.
Individuals must also meet certain experience requirements in order to obtain their license. Applicants must have a minimum of two years of experience in the insurance field, which must be verified by their employers. In addition, applicants must submit a background check and personal financial statement to the Department of Banking and Insurance.
